Frequently Asked Questions

General

Reinstatement is the process that students go through when their GPA falls below 2.0. The goal of Reinstatement is to give you the tools to set yourself up for success, both as a student and as a member of your community after graduation.

Washington State University expects students to make satisfactory academic progress toward their degree objectives. Undergraduate students are in good academic standing if both their current WSU semester and cumulative grade point averages are at least 2.0. (Please note that a higher GPA may be required to admit to major or graduation). Students not meeting these requirements are considered academically deficient and will need to apply for Reinstatement for continued enrollment.

Yes. If you want to take classes next semester (Spring or Fall), you have to apply for Reinstatement.

If you plan to take time away from WSU, do not apply. When you want to return you will apply during the semester before, as a Former Student Returning (FSR).

If you are currently enrolled in classes and have become academically deficient when final grades post, you must apply or appeal immediately if you wish to return the following semester.

Conditions assigned with an approved application or appeal can only be completed when you are an active and enrolled student.

Apply Here: reinstatement.wsu.edu

Yes. If you left WSU when academically deficient, you will need to apply for Reinstatement to return. You will need to apply during the semester before you plan to return to WSU.

The application opens on the first business day on or after March/October 1st and will close in early August/December for the following semester.

The closing date can vary, check the closing date on the applications page: reinstatement.wsu.edu

Switching campuses does not allow you to avoid Reinstatement. Instead, you will follow the Reinstatement protocols for the new campus. Each campus has its own process, so dates and costs may vary. It is your responsibility to reach out to the new campus to make sure you are on track. You will also need to submit an official Change of Campus Request: registrar.wsu.edu

Intercampus Enrollment is not the same as Change of Campus. If you are enrolling in classes from another campus for a semester through Intercampus Enrollment, you will still apply for Pullman Reinstatement.

While taking/retaking classes over summer or winter is encouraged, it will not affect your Reinstatement status. Reinstatement only affects Spring and Fall, and vice versa. You will not be put on Reinstatement for a deficient GPA during summer/winter, though it may affect your cumulative GPA for the following semester, which could put you on Reinstatement.

Applications & Appeals

Acceptable examples include:

  • A letter of support from a professor or academic advisor/mentor
  • Canvas documentation demonstrating extenuating circumstances
  • Communication/emails with your professor or WSU staff showing you were actively working through extenuating circumstances during the semester
  • A letter from a WSU staff member verifying your extenuating circumstances
  • Advising notes posted in MYWSU or email communication with advisors
  • A note or letter of support from a licensed health professional

Tips for requesting documentation:

  • Ask early: give your professor or advisor plenty of time to respond
  • Be clear: explain what the letter is for and any specific details they should include
  • Provide context: share deadlines and any forms or instructions they need
  • Follow up politely: a friendly reminder can help if the deadline is approaching

Please do not submit:

  • Medical charts or clinical notes
  • Photographs
  • Notes from parents or guardians
  • Mid-term grade reports

Try again. If the error persists:

  • Try a new card.
  • Try a new browser (Safari seems to have the most issues).
  • Clear your cache and cookies.
  • Try on a different device (phones seem to have the most issues).
  • Contact your bank.

If all of the above fail, contact us with your name, ID, which application/appeal you are trying to complete, details about the error you are receiving, and steps you have taken to try and resolve the issue.

Please contact us as soon as possible. An extension is not guaranteed, but may be discussed in special circumstances. If more than a week has passed since the deadline, you can call to discuss details for future applications.

We are only able to take payment through the application/appeal, by card. Any card should work, though some students have reported issues when using debit cards, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay. The issues are inconsistent though, with some students having no issues using these methods. If you do have issues, please try another method.

We are unable to take any payment in person.

If you are unable to afford the fee, please contact us to discuss possible options.

NO. Many students believe that once they have paid, their submission is complete. This is false. There are modules after payment, including a page to sign and submit your application/appeal.

If you do not sign, submit, and receive a confirmation of submission email, your application/appeal HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED.

Any applications/appeals not submitted by the deadline will not be reviewed. You will be dropped from any enrolled classes and the Reinstatement hold will prevent you from enrolling.

We strive to remove Reinstatement holds by the end of the following business day. If it has been longer than this, please contact us.

Login to my.WSU.edu. Click on the Tasks tile. Your holds will be listed here. Click on each hold for details regarding the hold.

An AIC is an Academic Improvement Conversation. It is a one-on-one meeting with your academic advisor. You will cover a range of topics, based on your responses in your application, and what your advisor believes would benefit you most. Your advisor will take notes, and submit them to the Reinstatement office to keep record of the meeting.

Workshops are one-hour presentations designed to teach you different skills that we hope you implement in your day to day life.

You must do 4 separate workshops. You will not get credit for repeated workshops.

We require that you attend both a Time Management and a Learning & Study Strategies workshop, as these are skills that any student can always improve upon.

You can find workshops in two locations. You can find them on ascc.wsu.edu under the find academic success tab, listed under the Reinstatement eligible workshops section. You can also find them on handshake listed under events. You will need to filter your results by searching for the WSU Reinstatement eligible label. All of the workshops are listed in both locations. There is usually at least one workshop per day Monday through Thursday before the due date.

Success coaching is a series of three meetings with a coach here in the ASCC. These meetings are separate from your AIC meetings with your academic advisor. The meetings are half an hour, and focus on skills that will help you improve as a student. While success coaching may cover some of the same topics as the workshops, they are far more detailed and specific to you and your situation.

You will receive an email to your WSU email at the beginning of the semester from your coach to schedule your first meeting.

Career coaching is a one time, one hour appointment with an ASCC career coach. This condition is limited to students close to graduation, with 90 or more credits. These meetings focus more on life after graduation, and may cover topics such as career exploration, job searching, resume building, and interviewing, as well as any plans a student has postgraduation.

No. An AIC is with your primary academic advisor. Success coaching is in the ASCC. All students are assigned three AIC meetings with their academic advisor. If you are also assigned the Success Coaching condition, you must complete it in addition to your AIC’s.

All communication from the Reinstatement Office is sent to your WSU email. These dates are listed in the email you received when your application/appeal was approved, as well as in the reminder emails you receive each week. They are also listed on the Reinstatement homepage reinstatement.wsu.edu under Condition Due Dates and Deadlines.

A Reinstatement Conditions hold will be added to your account if you are missing a condition once the due date has passed. You may see multiple holds if you are missing multiple conditions. This hold will be removed by the end of the next business day after you complete the condition, as long as the deadline has not passed.

If you do not complete a condition by the deadline, you will fall under Academic Regulation 41 (R41). This is a one semester suspension, unless you have an approved appeal. A link to the appeal form will be sent to your WSU email once you have completed ALL of your conditions.

If you do not complete your conditions, you will be sent the appeal form during finals week.

Please contact the Reinstatement Office if you have questions on Academic Regulation 41.
